The World Health Organization (WHO) is watching with alarm the growing number of tuberculosis patients in Europe and is admitting the epidemic by the end of the year. This was stated on Wednesday, September 16, by the WHO representative in Russia Melita Vuinovich during a press conference.

“We are very afraid that by the end of the year we will see an increase in the number of people getting sick and a new TB epidemic to be prevented. This is very important for us,” she said.

According to Vujnovic, in order to prevent the epidemic, European countries must respond not only at the level of the health system, but also at the political level.

In Europe, the number of tuberculosis cases decreased in six months in 2020, but the diagnostic system was paralyzed by the coronavirus pandemic, a WHO representative added.

If at present it is not possible to detect tuberculosis in 15 percent of cases, the number of cases may increase later by 30 percent. The situation is alarming, said Vuinovich.
