Yevgeny Zinichev, head of the Russian Emergencies Ministry, died

Minister for Civil Defense, Emergencies and Elimination of Consequences of Natural Disasters Yevgeny Zinichev died during an exercise. This was reported in the press service of the ministry.

“EMERCOM of Russia regrettably informs that Yevgeny Zinichev tragically died in the performance of his official duty while being at interdepartmental exercises on protection from emergencies in the Arctic zone, saving a man’s life,” the EMERCOM said.

Zinichev died trying to save film director Alexander Melnik, who worked at the site of the exercise, the agency specified. According to the Ministry of Emergency Situations, Melnik came to Norilsk to choose locations for filming a documentary about the development of the Arctic and the Northern Sea Route. The director was also killed.

The head of the state TV channel RT, Margarita Simonyan, wrote in her Telegram channel that Zinichev and Melnik, whom she calls the cameraman, were standing on the edge of the ledge. Melnik, according to her, slipped and fell into the water, and Zinichev “rushed” after him into the water and crashed on the protruding rock.

The day before the Ministry of Emergency Situations informed about the beginning of the experimental research trainings in the Arctic zone. They started in seven regions. As it was reported in the department, the exercises are aimed at practicing scenarios of emergency situations on water and land.
